Biography
Signed from Rapallo to replace the aging Fontana, he went on to spend twelve seasons in the white shirt, becoming the most capped player in Spezia’s history and the club’s iconic captain, wearing the armband in 360 matches. Born in Vado, but Spezzino by adoption, he made his debut on September 17, 1967, in a 2–2 draw against Maceratese.
In an era when teams typically lined up with four defenders, three man-markers and one player tasked with organizing the back line, he mastered the role of sweeper. Physically strong and dominant in the air, he led the defense with authority, intelligence, and impeccable positioning, earning respect whenever opponents ventured into the penalty area.
Yet he was a defender of rare sportsmanship. In two of his seasons with the Aquilotti, he did not miss a single match. Not one to push forward into the opposing box, he scored just two goals in his long Spezia career. The first came in his eighth season, a crucial equalizer at the Picco against Novese (1–1), scored seven minutes from time. The second arrived against Grosseto, played on neutral ground in Viareggio due to the suspension of the stadium on Viale Fieschi following the attack on referee Adamu of Cagliari during Spezia–Arezzo.
A complete footballer, he was captain not only because of his longevity, but for his ability to steady and guide the team in any situation. He retired after the first season of league restructuring that introduced Serie C1, a campaign that ended with Spezia finishing second from bottom and being relegated.
He later returned to the club as head coach and also managed Migliarinese and Sarzanese. He chose to remain in La Spezia, now fully his adopted home, and remains a passionate supporter of the white shirt that, as fans like to say, was stitched to his skin.
