Biography
A product of Sampdoria's youth academy, the strong Genoese defender began his career at Albenga (Interregional), before spending two years at Baracca Lugo, where he helped the team earn promotion to Serie C1. After two seasons at Messina (one in Serie B), he joined Spezia, managed by the up-and-coming Adriano Cadregari.
He was a rock-solid defender who often found himself in the referees' sights, racking up five red cards. He made his debut in Empoli-Spezia 0-1 on 19 September 1993. It was a team that immediately bonded
with the environment, but which plummeted day after day until relegation.
Vecchio fought like a lion and was also good at attacking. So much so that he scored two goals: against Carpi, decisive in securing a 2-2 draw, and against Empoli, in a match in which he was the absolute star: on 30 January, he first scored the 1-0, then an own goal restored parity. It was his second consecutive own goal in just seven days. In the following years, he was at the heart of the defence, became captain and scored two more goals per season. In the first, he equalised in Modena in the 89th minute - and a minute later, the Aquilotti scored the winning goal - and decided Spezia-Ravenna 3-2. In the other - securing safety in the play-outs against Pro Sesto - he scored against Brescello (1-0) and Monza (2-0). He also started the 1996-97 season as captain, the season in which the team finished last, but in October he left the Aquilotti to join Avellino. He remains very attached to Spezia, of which he is a fan, and often attends matches with the Ultras. From the 2022/2023 season to the 2023/2024 season, he coached the Primavera Aquilotta, and since 2024 he has been Head of Youth Development at the club in Via Melara.
