The Ligurian derby against Genoa ended 1-1, a result that doesn’t satisfy Thiago Motta’s team which dominated in a second-half full of missed opportunities. Here are the words of the coach to the press:
"We did everything we could today to win, we created a lot of good occasions, but we didn't manage to close out the game. I go home with the sadness and bitterness of not having won a game like tonight's, but at the same time, I'm confident because especially in the second half I saw a performance that I'm completely satisfied with.
We deserved to win perhaps even more than in other matches, the difference between us and Genoa this evening was huge, and that's why there is so much regret.
At the end of the game, I decided to field Antiste because of his excellent defensive skills, and Gyasi dropped back into midfield for the same reason. We were well positioned on the pitch, we dominated, and this is confirmed by the fact that they only created one chance to score.
Strelec is a growing boy and so is the whole team. He arrived with desire and determination, I see him every day in training, he can understand the situations of the game and to position himself on the field, certainly has a huge margin for improvement, but I'm positive because he is always very attentive and available for the team, he must continue like this.
The bitterness of not winning a dominated game is normal and it will help us to focus and face the week ahead with our heads held high.
We have an idea of the game that is not always the same but changes depending on the games and the teams we face from time to time. Tonight, like the last game, we played better than our opponent, but we couldn't win, which is what counts in the end. Obviously, if you play well, you are more likely to win, but it's not enough to bring home the three points.
Colley owes it all to himself. From the first day he arrived, he made himself available not only to me but to the whole team, he wants to learn, to grow, and to show his value. The credit is all his, my role is to put the boys in a position to give their best, but it always depends on them, and Colley always shows great professionalism and availability: I'm happy to have him back in the group."
