Following the home match against Cesena, Spezia Calcio President Charlie Stillitano spoke to the media: “First of all, I want to say that we’re all very disappointed because we haven’t started the season the way we wanted. The Owner, Tom Roberts, was here today as well, and together we’ll carefully analyze the situation. The post-match moment is always heated, so it’s important to talk only after a thorough evaluation, and that’s exactly what we’ll do.
This isn’t an issue we can solve overnight. We need to take a step back and look at every aspect calmly and rationally, thinking carefully about what’s best for this team. Last year we came so close to Serie A, and today we’re sitting at the bottom of the table, with more or less the same squad. So again, we need to take a cold, honest look at the situation.
Everything is on the table right now. This is a fantastic club, and we’re proud to be here. But I know how important it is to analyze every situation carefully, because, in football as in life, there are great moments and disappointing ones. We have to look ahead and focus on what’s best for Spezia. Tomorrow I’ll meet with Tom Roberts, along with Gazzoli, Corradino, and Melissano, and together we’ll review everything and make collective decisions.
The issue lies on the field, that’s clear. One of my former coaches once told me, ‘That’s football: even with a great coach and great players, things can still go wrong.’ This club needed a solid owner, otherwise, it would have been difficult for Spezia, and Tom Roberts has done everything he could. He played football himself, he understands situations like this, and together we’ll figure out the best way forward. It’s our responsibility to make the right assessments and find the right solutions for this club and for this city. The only person not under evaluation here is Tom Roberts, who, as I said, has done everything expected of him.
I’ve spoken with Tom in the last few days, and he’s fully committed to staying here long-term, that’s not up for debate. This team is made up of strong players who came just short of promotion last season. We still have thirty matches ahead of us, and we want to find the right path for the future. We’re not owners who make rash or destructive decisions; the club is stable, and the players have quality. But of course, they also need to take their share of responsibility, just as the coach and each of us must. Everyone has to take accountability for this difficult situation, no one excluded.
This is a competitive team; we just need to work hard and find the right solution. That’s the only way to turn things around. But as I said, now isn’t the time to say more, it’s time to analyze, reflect, and understand what needs to be done to change the course of things".
