As a consequence of the reforms implemented for the structure of the championships, in the 1934-35 season Spezia was relegated to Serie C, along with half of Serie B teams. In the 1935-36 season the Aquilotti played a great championship that became a tight head-to-head with Sanremese: the tournament ended with appeals, penalties, and protests, but in the end Spezia returned in Serie B. In 1936 Spezia assumed the new name of A.C. Spezia; in 1938-39 came a new relegation in Serie C, and Spezia managed to win the championship but to access Serie B was necessary to overcome Reggiana, Savona, and Taranto, which were the winners of the other rounds of Serie C.
In the playoffs, Spezia was eliminated because of the goal difference, but the promotion to Serie B arrived anyway thanks to the exclusion of Palermo for economic reasons.
