We got off to a late start compared to our usual schedule because we began with a team that changed day by day, and I’m asking the boys to make a lot of sacrifices—especially mental ones—by adding plenty of extra video sessions and trying to instill a lot of knowledge; Today on the field we had three players born in 2006, one born in 2005—overall, a very young team that’s hungry for success: I just hope they’ll always stay focused and maintain that hunger, without ever letting results distract them.
I’m asking the boys never to back down, to keep playing the way we know how. Sometimes, perhaps because of their youth, we don’t realize what kind of mini-match we’re in, but I have to thank the more experienced players who are leading and guiding the group—and in my opinion, they’re also having a lot of fun.
I was fortunate enough to coach Šapola last year; at the start, he was an 18-year-old with tremendous talent, but he needed to gain knowledge and experience, and this year he’s improved a lot. He’s an example—as are the other young players—who work with great dedication, and by continuing to work this way day after day, they’ll be able to grow and fully express their talents.
Hunger and aggressiveness are essential in this league, and I’ve been very clear with my players about this from the very beginning.
I don’t think the league is set in stone yet, because there are many strong teams, like Perugia, which is very well-built and has key players for this division; we just have to focus on our own path of growth, aware that right now there are some teams that are more prepared than we are because they also have more experience; for our part, however, we can’t overlook organization and always giving 100%; we don’t have the experience to handle critical moments, not even from an individual standpoint, while other teams can win games just through cunning and guile.”
