After the match against Torres, here’s what Aquila coach Marco Turati had to say: “As far as the result goes, we’re very satisfied, and I can say that I only got a little frustrated during those five or six minutes when we forced the play too much—even to the point of conceding a goal. After that, we went back to playing aggressively, with lots of players pushing into the opponent’s half, doing what we normally do during the week, so I’m very satisfied.
Even before the game, I saw in the team’s eyes that essential hunger to play soccer in this jersey; perhaps the only players who stand out to those watching the game are the wingers—who are the most creative players and are tasked with creating opportunities—but in reality, even though they played well, they could have done even better. Durmush scored a goal and provided an assist; Cardinali played his role well, but he needs to understand when to accelerate and when to hold back, while Cazzadori—who isn’t a winger—put in a tremendous performance full of sacrifice. The fullbacks? Since we were short-handed in that position, this morning I asked Cancellieri if he’d be willing to move to the right—a role he admitted he’d never played before—but he put in an excellent performance in every respect, and I’m very pleased with that.
We saw a positive performance from Spezia, but there’s still a lot of work to be done to improve. I’m fortunate because we’ve been able to work from the start with the players who started today, with the exception of Šapola—who, however, had already worked with me last year, so he certainly already had the necessary understanding to fit into our system; the new arrivals definitely need to speed up their integration, and we’ll do everything we can to help them. Bastoni? It’ll take time to integrate him into our system and get him into top physical shape, but he’s a key player for us—one who’s in a league of his own compared to this competition. I have a special relationship with him; what we’ve achieved here together is part of history. After the game, we discussed some of his movements on the field, but it’s worth noting that he trained as a midfielder all week, and only today did I ask him to return to his old position. He’s a fantastic player who immediately made himself available and who has Spezia in his blood: you can feel it and see it in everything he does.
Mazzocchi? He had a good game—he scored a goal and could have scored more—and he’s the classic all-around player, a key element in any soccer team; in my opinion, he can score far more than his career stats suggest, but he did well today too, even if—as with attacking wingers—he needs to find more spark, and that will come as the weeks go by. Behind him, let’s not forget Cazzadori; from the start, he’s had to adapt to playing as a winger, but we know what he can bring even in the striker role.
We had an excellent first half, though we should have shown more quality in the final third; in the second half, we started better, perhaps paying too dearly for a few mistakes, but then in the last half-hour we played really well, and I’m very happy—especially with the quality we showed in the final third.
Joselito? He’s a player who brings a lot of enthusiasm, who is 100% committed to our project, and I have to say that from the first day of training camp to today, he’s the one who’s improved the most; he’s eager to learn, constantly absorbing new concepts, and as he settles into that role, he’ll raise his level game after game.”
