Following the match in Pescara – the team’s sixth consecutive league win – manager Marco Turati spoke to the press as follows: “In the first half, we gave the ball away a few times too many, allowing dangerous counter-attacks from a side with strong strikers in their squad. This happened because, on the one hand, we were less precise than usual, and on the other, a bit naive in certain situations. These things happen because we’re a very young side and we’re still getting to know one another, but matches like this certainly help us to mature.
Mazzocchi? A strong, all-round striker who, to date, has been the driving force behind the team both in matches and in training. Today he put in at least 70 minutes of tremendous effort; perhaps he wasn’t quite as effective as in other matches, and I knew I had a player like Zilli on the bench – a lad I didn’t hesitate to bring on because he’s been training at his absolute best since he arrived, and today he played twenty minutes of top-class football.”
We set out with the idea of building things up step by step, but what we needed right from the start was the hunger and the desire to impose our own style of play – aspects that are fundamental in this division. Clearly, we still need to improve in terms of decision-making. Today, perhaps in certain situations we weren’t quite at our sharpest, but when you train with young lads who are hungry for success, who always show great commitment and enthusiasm, our play improves day by day and even our mistakes help us to grow.
Pescara is a club that deserves a place in Serie A, just like ours. When I was called to come to La Spezia, I knew there would be difficulties, because it was a summer of major changes, and if we now have a clear identity, the credit goes largely to my lads because they always show extraordinary commitment: in terms of dedication, hunger and sacrifice, I’ve never had anything to criticise about this group. We can still improve; not everything is perfect, but the fact that the team already has a clear identity by the end of September is a source of great pride for me.
I’ve seen so many different scenarios in my career; we have a very slight advantage today, but that doesn’t mean anything. We need to focus on carrying on working hard; there are lots of well-organised teams in this league with more experience than us, so we must continue to take it one step at a time, determined to stay amongst the top six or seven teams."
