After the match in Pescara, Coach Luca D'Angelo spoke to the media: “Our first half wasn’t good enough. In the second half we tried to respond, but our chances of reaching the playouts were already very slim, especially because not only did we fail to win, but the other results also went against us.
In the previous two seasons, we achieved incredible results, first with an unexpected survival, then narrowly missing promotion to Serie A while also setting Spezia Calcio’s record for points in Serie B. This year, however, I share responsibility for a relegation, and it is only right that I take my share of the blame.
At the beginning of the season, we certainly made mistakes because all of us, myself first and foremost, should have shown greater foresight and understood that no two seasons are the same, and that rebuilding after such a painful disappointment is never easy. We also paid a heavy price for ending last season with so many injuries, and during preseason we had to prepare with a large number of Primavera players, which objectively left the squad much weaker at the start of the campaign compared to before.
I underestimated the situation myself and believed we could still put together a good season, perhaps not like the previous one, but still a positive campaign. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.
I can’t speak about the period when I wasn’t here, but I can say that in these final matches the team gave everything it had to try and stay up, and the ownership put us in the best possible position to fight for survival. Still, it wasn’t enough, and this remains a huge disappointment.
My contract with Spezia? Honestly, I haven’t thought about the future, and I don’t think now is the right time to do so. We’ll discuss it when the time comes, but at the moment it’s not on my mind, because I truly believed we could avoid relegation, and we didn’t. That is the only thing that matters right now.
Just as I received significant praise for the previous seasons, I must now take responsibility for the shortcomings of the season that ended tonight. At the beginning of the campaign, we had clearly lost what had defined us in previous years, that competitive intensity which had been decisive in achieving results. It happened at a subconscious level, probably because we never truly moved on from missing out on Serie A by a single goal.
The results from the other matches? I didn’t watch them, so I can’t judge them. First and foremost, though, we needed to win our own match, and we didn’t.”
