Born in 1989, the best Swedish midfielder in 2013, Ekdal grew up in the youth ranks of IF Brommapojkarna, a Swedish club based in Stockholm, his hometown, before coming to Italy in 2009 with the Juventus Primavera team, with whom he immediately scored in the Viareggio Tournament, also collecting three appearances for the first team.
The following season on loan at Siena, he made 27 appearances and scored one goal, his first in Serie A, continuing his Italian career between Bologna and Cagliari, with whom he made 121 appearances and scored eight goals in Sardinia.
In 2015 he arrived at Hamburg, making 57 appearances and scoring one goal, before leaving Germany in 2018 to wear the Sampdoria jersey, where he immediately earned a starting berth for a haul of 126 appearances in four years, in which he stood out for his class and personality, leading the Sampdoria midfield to perfection.
In the national team, after the years in the youth selections, the debut is dated 10 August 2011 in the friendly against Ukraine, totaling 66 tokens so far, including starring appearances in the 2018 World Cup as well as Euro 2016 and Euro 2020.
