A press conference was held this morning to introduce new Eagles coach Massimiliano Alvini, who spoke for the first time as coach of Spezia Calcio.
Taking the floor first was Chief Football Officer Eduardo Macia, who introduced the new coach by introducing the season to come: "After the hard times of relegation, the motivation is maximum to start again and the Spezia Calcio project restarts from the figure of coach Massimiliano Alvini, an experienced coach, chosen to guide our team towards our goal. We want to fight to return to Serie A and, above all, we want to return prepared in all respects. To reiterate, the most important thing is to have the conditions to be a Serie A club, not only on the field, but all round. Today is the welcome day of the coach, whom we want to thank for having given confidence to this project, the same confidence we have towards him. The team? We want to give the coach a 75%/80% complete team as soon as possible, because a coach cannot arrive at the end of August and change 5-6 players, then lose time to reorganize team and work. Clearly the market dynamics are not easy, moreover we will have to be good at softening the blow of the fall, putting in place a mentality suitable for a more aggressive league like Serie B; to date on the market we have not included any player and no player has come to us to leave, but it is clear that the summer is very long and we have very clear ideas about what we have to do."
Next, word to the new Aquilotto coach, Massimiliano Alvini: "I thank the Director for the trust and I can say that the goal must be exactly what he said. We want to start again and be ready immediately, determined to interpret the championship in the best way possible and do everything to return to where Spezia deserves to be. We want to do our best, to work to get the best we can, we know what the path will be, we know what the expectations are and we will have to give everything to get back to the category that Spezia left: that is the goal, there is no point in going around it.
From my side coaching Spezia is a source of enormous satisfaction. Being chosen by the Directors and the Ownership gives great pleasure, my focus now is on what we want to achieve, I am very focused on what awaits me from tomorrow and I can say that between us there has been great harmony from the first confrontation.
At this moment in history talking about a system of play is not easy, a coach if he understands where to go must study the material he has and from that start to develop a path. If I look at the players available today I think it is a strong team, there is no fixed system of play in my head, we will evaluate and make the best decisions. My path is long and I have worked in every possible way.
Relegation is always painful, I did not expect Spezia to relegate, but soccer is unpredictable. For me Spezia is a strong team, with important values, but now I am interested not so much in what happened in the last season, but what will happen from now on. I hope that these players, who are important, can be enthusiastic to marry this project and fight to bring Spezia back to the top.
Coming to play here is always nice, the Picco is tough, when it pushes you can feel it and I hope it can accompany us again this year; I believe so much in the relationship between team, fans and club, because it is a fantastic mixture, because there is no soccer without fans, without feeling dragged by a curve and a fan base that wants to reflect itself in the team. The empathy that is created between the team and the fans is fundamental, and coming here is something fantastic: I want to create this mixture.
I think playing for Spezia is an important factor, it's responsibility and a sense of belonging; there is a lot of clarity between us, let's leave and see how situations will unfold, we have very clear ideas about what we want to do.
Being here today and being able to plan Spezia's season is a source of satisfaction, pleasure, and enthusiasm, so the desire is maximum. We are looking ahead, with clear ideas, with determination and enthusiasm. This is the first time I am coaching in a city by the sea, and so I want to make a reference to a phrase by Seneca that has always struck me: "there is no favorable wind if the sailor does not know where to go," and I know very well where we want to go.
Serie B is a highly competitive league, different from Serie A, very balanced, difficult, where the organization of teams is rewarded over individuality; in Serie B organization is very very important.
I would like to coach players who live the city of Spezia, who have the desire to play for the jersey they wear, and I expect the best starting with those who will take part in the Santa Cristina retreat, as well as those who will join in the running: I can't wait to start."
To close, word also went to the DS, Stefano Melissano: "It is important that only players who truly believe in the project and who want to sacrifice themselves for the good of Spezia remain here, fighting every day for the good of the white jersey, ready to face a difficult championship like Serie B. At the moment we have not received any offers, we know that there may be inevitable departures, but it is part of the job and we will have to work to evaluate the various situations and create a competitive team suitable for the new championship that we are going to do".
