In anticipation of the first league match, Jacopo Foschi, head coach of the Women’s First Team, reflected on the journey so far: “The excitement of leading this team, which represents Spezia Calcio’s long-held desire to offer a pathway for players after several seasons of a girls' youth program, is immense. It’s incredibly gratifying to finally provide the opportunity for players to continue their development within the Club, and I feel a great deal of enthusiasm for this new adventure.
Our primary goal was to establish a first team, and that remains the main objective for the season. Competitively, we haven’t set any specific targets for now; we’re focused on growth day by day, emphasizing performance over results.
The league is just around the corner, and our initial outings have given us valuable insights, as we faced two teams we’ll meet in our league. The girls performed well, concentrating solely on playing their game and reflecting our daily training on the field.
Initially, the squad was very young, but we’ve since added more experienced players, who will surely help the group grow further. It may take some time to find the right balance, but this is an important step in the progression of this new project.
At the youth level, we’re working with all age groups, always aiming to integrate younger players with the older ones to broaden their skill set. There’s a lot of work to be done, of course, but the start has been very positive, and we’re all very pleased.
What does it feel like to lead Spezia? Representing the colors of our city is truly indescribable. The excitement is high, and I hope to have this opportunity for a long time, growing step by step alongside the project.
Together with the staff, we’re working on multiple aspects, always keeping in mind that the goal is to build a team that competes the right way in the league, focusing more on performance than the result. This is exactly what I ask of our players; it may seem unusual since we’re a first team, but even in our match analysis, we emphasize that results are secondary this year. What matters most is the growth of the team, which must come through strong performances.
My experience in women’s football has brought me great joy, and I’m learning many new things compared to my background in men’s football. I can honestly say I’m very happy to be leading the Eccellenza team, and working in women’s football has given me a lot of positivity and new energy.
As for Beppe Vecchio, working with him daily is something unique. He’s an invaluable resource for all coaches, with extensive experience across various roles in football, and he’s a true emblem of Spezia Calcio. He knows this environment inside and out, both on and off the field, and he’s a wellspring of advice. Every conversation is an opportunity for personal and professional growth".
