Match report – Spezia and Pistoiese shared the points in the third and final Group 5 match of the 76th Viareggio Cup, with the Aquilotti finishing top of the group on five points. That total secures head coach Alessi’s side a place in the Round of 16, where they will face Lucchese.
It was a very balanced contest from start to finish. Spezia took the lead shortly before the half-hour mark through Ceccolini, who finished off an assist from Ghetti to score his second goal of the tournament.
The Tuscan side responded just minutes later, as Vannacci produced a perfect diagonal strike that left Doretti with no chance and restored parity.
Late in the first half, however, Spezia came very close to regaining the lead, twice through D'Ambrosio, who first struck the post with a close-range effort before hitting the crossbar with the goalkeeper already beaten.
Another effort off the woodwork arrived in the second half, this time for Pistoiese, when Selvi came within inches of putting his side ahead, only to be denied by the crossbar.
The balance between the two teams continued after the break, and the scoreline remained unchanged until the referee’s final whistle.
Head coach David Alessi’s comments: "Today we played a good first half and deservedly took the lead, but unfortunately we conceded the equalizer following an individual mistake.
Throughout the match the team managed possession well and approached the game with the right attitude and intensity, creating several chances and also hitting a post and a crossbar.
In the second half the game flowed without many key moments, but the team’s attitude and game management were still positive, especially considering this was our fourth match in six days. We’re very pleased to have progressed from the group, particularly as we’re playing this competition with several underage players".
