Head coach Roberto Donadoni spoke to the media in the press room after the match: “I like to see the glass half full, and I think the team delivered a solid performance, creating several chances against the league leaders. What was missing, though, was that extra bit of ruthlessness that’s essential to turn chances into goals, and the same ruthlessness is also needed defensively, to avoid conceding preventable goals.
On both the first and second goals we conceded, we didn’t read the moment well. And in the situations where we should have made the difference, we lacked the composure and the edge that can completely change a match.
At this stage, we can’t afford to give anything away, yet we keep conceding situations that end up defining the game. Now we have to pick ourselves up, there’s one final match before the break that we absolutely cannot afford to get wrong.
The penalty on Artistico? I don’t like to talk too much about the referee’s work, but that decision is hard to swallow because, in my opinion, it was a clear penalty, and there was also the possibility of Monterisi being sent off. These are situations that change a game: they give you momentum and a numerical advantage. In that instance, I believe the opponent threw himself into Artistico, preventing him from getting his shot away. Beyond that, we had other promising situations as well, but we didn’t manage them properly, so there’s room for improvement.
Esposito’s late yellow card? Those are naïve mistakes we can’t afford to make. I told the players we needed to finish with eleven men, we did, but we still lose a player for the next match. These situations frustrate me and disappoint me, because ultimately the team is the one that pays the price.
The transfer market? As I said in the pre-match press conference, I believe signings should be wrapped up as soon as possible, without waiting until the end of the window. We have clear ideas and have already identified the key areas where we need to intervene, so I hope the President, who seemed largely in agreement, can act quickly.
In six matches, I’ve never seen one team clearly superior to another, because Serie B is a league where the gap between teams is minimal. That can also be a positive for us, but we have to quickly understand that these differences aren’t only about technical quality, they’re also about other factors.
Today I saw a Frosinone side that knows how to make the most of its strengths, and that’s important because sometimes the focus is only on weaknesses. It’s equally important to recognize and enhance what you do well. Our opponents played with great competitive edge today, always breaking forward with hunger and intensity. They have excellent wide players, and the attackers are very strong in one-on-one situations".
