Following the win over Avellino, head coach Roberto Donadoni spoke to the media in the press room: “I congratulated the players because, in terms of attitude and heart, they were excellent. It’s a shame about the two forced substitutions in the first half. Bandinelli suffered the same issue again, and I’m really disappointed for him because we were convinced he had put it behind him. I feel very sorry for him, as he truly cares about the team, and having the same problem occur three times is hard to accept. Mateju tried to carry on despite discomfort in his hamstring, but we eventually had to take him off as well to avoid making an already delicate situation worse.
The substitution at half-time was also due to the fact that we only had one substitution window left. The players who came on did very well, and I’d like to single out Comotto and Romano, the youngest players, who came on with real personality.
I praised the squad: they battled against a team that showed significant quality. We handled the contest well, even if we still need to improve in possession management and decision-making, because especially in the second half we could have killed the game off. At times you need a bit more guile, to be less predictable, that’s how you surprise your opponents.
The league table might not help us mentally, but the only way out is through belief and performances.
In the second half, Avellino tried to throw everything forward, and we lacked the clarity and conviction needed to make the most of the counter-attacking chances we had.
Di Serio didn’t come on for Soleri because I felt a quality player like Verde could break up play and be useful on the counter, and that’s exactly what happened.
Midfield-wise, much of the match was played with very young players who are just starting their journey, but they all did well to put in the hard work and battle, understanding that today the priority was to fight. Of course, in some situations we could have managed the ball with more composure, that’s another step in our growth that we need to take".
