Two days ahead of the first leg of the semifinal against Catanzaro, Spezia head coach Luca D’Angelo spoke to the press: “We need to focus solely on the match in Catanzaro and not let our minds wander elsewhere. We know we're facing a tough opponent. Both league matches could have easily ended in draws, but we must travel to Calabria with confidence and the goal of performing well at the Ceravolo.
A team must play to its strengths, and that’s exactly what we’ll aim to do on Tuesday evening.
Our forwards are all in good shape. Naturally, we’ll try to make the best selection based on the characteristics of Catanzaro’s defense. Pio Esposito is doing very well, he’s had a fantastic season and wants to carry that momentum forward, looking to make an impact in the upcoming matches as well.
Of course, I watched Catanzaro-Cesena, but every game is different. Whether they’ll play more aggressively or sit back remains to be seen.
The two matches we played against Catanzaro taught us that you always need to stay focused, even when you’re in control of the game. And on Wednesday evening, we’ll need to stay fully engaged throughout the match.
Over the past month, it would have been difficult to prepare exclusively for the playoffs, both because we were still in contention for second place up until the final matchdays, and because we had several players sidelined, which often left us with limited options.
As for the lineup, as always, we’ll decide tomorrow who will start.
Matches are decided in the midfield, and it’s primarily the players, first individually, then as a team—alongside the decisions made by the coaching staff, that determine the outcome. Ours is certainly one of the youngest squads in the league, but when young players perform like Pio Esposito, that’s more than fine.
We’ve already written some memorable pages in this club’s history, playing matches that will remain in the collective memory of our fans. But to truly make history, we know we need to achieve the most important result.
The psychological aspect is certainly key, but the team is in a good place. As Coach Conte once said, when you have the chance to make history, you must seize it, and our players are fully aware of that.
It’s right that these four teams are in the semifinals, they’ve performed the best, alongside Sassuolo and Pisa, who also earned their wins on merit.
Is it a long trip? Yes, it’s definitely a significant distance for our fans, but we’ll do everything we can, for those who will travel with us, for our Club, and for the city we represent, which will surely support us with great passion, even from home, watching on television".
