It’s the penultimate day of preparations at Spezia as the team is ready to return to action against Südtirol at the "Picco" on Sunday, in the 14th round of Serie BKT. As usual, Spezia head coach Luca D’Angelo addressed the media in his pre-match press conference:
“The team is improving day by day, which is undoubtedly a positive sign, but we must not rest on our laurels. We need to continue working on many aspects. We’re performing well, but the season is very long and filled with potential pitfalls.
I have the full team available, except for Sarr, who is close to returning. This gives me a lot of options for Sunday. Goalkeeper competition? We’ll address that when Sarr is physically ready and can compete on equal footing.
Südtirol is a strong team that has often played well despite not earning the results they might have deserved. It will require a match characterized by a strong mentality, great focus, and smart decision-making.
Up front, all the forwards are in good shape, giving us a wide range of choices. We’ll make the best decisions based on our opponents and the final fitness levels of the players.
As for Bertola, I think he’s mature for his age. I haven’t discussed his contract situation with him because my focus is on the pitch. What I’ve asked the management is to keep him with us until the end of the season. After that, he and his family, along with his agents, will decide the next steps, but I prefer not to intervene in those matters.
The fitness levels of our players form the foundation of my decisions, combined with the work we’ve done during the week and the characteristics of our opponents. It’s never easy to choose when you have everyone available—someone inevitably has to miss out—but I have a squad of serious professionals who care deeply about the success of Spezia.
Kouda? Rachid is doing well. He made a solid impact when he came on against Brescia. We had planned to increase his minutes during the game in Castellammare, but the match developed in a way that required other solutions. On Sunday, he’ll be available—whether he starts or comes on later will depend.
Čolak? I’ve been pleased with him even before his goal in Castellammare. He’s always dangerous, but of course, the first goal is an extra confidence boost for any forward. He’s consistently made my decisions difficult because of his quality, experience, and work ethic. Sunday will be no different as I aim to make the best choices for the match.
I’m not thinking ahead to future matches—my focus, and that of my players, is solely on Südtirol. Especially in this league, the only thing that matters is the match at hand, as any team can beat another.
Degli Innocenti is in excellent form now. He may have been at a disadvantage earlier because others were in better shape, but he’s performing well and always comes on with the right attitude. He’s a valuable option in a midfield with plenty of depth and can play from the start or as a substitute.
We have at least four players who can operate out wide, but the final decision will depend on their form and the type of game we want to play. Of course, I’m happy to have such a range of options".
