Luca D'Angelo’s comments following the playoff match against Cremonese: “Tonight's result is clearly a tough one to swallow. It's a heavy disappointment, no doubt about it. But we have to accept it, because today Cremonese proved to be the better team. In the first leg, we were able to trouble them tactically, but today their greater experience, and without a doubt, the quality of Stroppa, who’s a better coach than I am, made the difference. The truth is, over the two legs, they showed they were stronger than us.
Right now, I think we all need a break. That’s just honest. Some of our players absolutely deserve a chance in Serie A, they've shown they belong there. But beyond that, I’m not thinking too far ahead. This disappointment needs time to settle.
On Stroppa: Along with Grosso and Pippo Inzaghi, who’ve also won in the past, Stroppa is a proven winner. One of the best in Serie B. He’s also a good person and that’s something I sincerely respect.
On starting Salvatore Esposito: First of all, he deserves our thanks. He played without really training, and probably at 60 to 70 percent of his full condition. We chose to start him because we wanted more control of the ball. But honestly, beyond him, we reached the end of this season carrying a lot of physical issues. What got us through was the incredible dedication of the players, they stepped on the field and gave everything, right to the final whistle.
At this point, we all need rest. I just want to say thank you to everyone. And I’m deeply sorry I couldn’t repay the trust people placed in me. What hurts the most is seeing the disappointment on so many faces. When I lose, I don’t feel bad for myself, I’ve always said that. I’m a man of sport, and I know sometimes you don’t win. But I hurt for all the people who waited, who hoped, who gave us their energy. And now they’re left with this sadness.
I want to thank every person who’s stood by us since the start of the season. What we did this year was a continuation of the journey we began last year. And I’m crushed thinking about the pain they’re feeling now. But I believe everyone knows, our players gave everything they had to try and make Serie A a reality.
I remember how, back in January of last year, we were facing protests, ironically, just before playing Cremonese. And today, there were thousands of people waiting for us, escorting us, believing in us. They deserved to celebrate Serie A. They deserved to experience it again.
Fifteen or twenty years from now, I think there are some games people will still remember. Personally, one that stays with me is the first-leg win over Cesena. Bertola scoring in the dying seconds, and Soleri already in goal for over ten minutes, that kind of emotion doesn’t fade. Moments like that stay with you for a lifetime".
