From the training camp in Pontremoli, we’re introduced to another new Aquilotti signing, Kevin Cannavò, an attacking winger who arrived on the shores of the Gulf of Poets after his stint at Cosenza and is ready to contribute to the Aquilotti cause: “This training camp is going very well; the coach is making us run a lot, and we’re gradually coming together as a group, trying to get to know each other better and better.
There are a lot of experienced players in the locker room, and I consider myself one of them—partly because I’ve already played in all three Serie C divisions, which are all really tough. The level of play is high, and every team can give you a hard time, so the goal is to keep the team’s performance at the highest possible level for as long as possible.
In recent years, I’ve played in many different positions; I consider myself a versatile player. I see that the coach relies heavily on the wingers, trying to isolate them as much as possible, but I can say that I’ll give it my all and adapt to whatever role I’m asked to play.
When I got the call from Spezia, it was truly a source of great pride; I was overjoyed and couldn’t wait to start this new adventure.
In June, I was called up to the Maltese national team—an opportunity I had thanks to my grandmother, who is Maltese. I was proud to seize this chance, and the two friendlies in June were amazing in terms of the fans, the towns, and the stadiums, so I hope it happens again in the future.
Playing in all three Serie C divisions has taught me a lot. Our line of work requires us to always be ready to move to a new city and environment, but I think it was a pleasure to experience them all, because you notice big differences in the local atmospheres; Division C is undoubtedly the most challenging, since you play in cities with prestige and tradition, but I say this without taking anything away from the other two divisions, which, as I said before, are all truly competitive.
For me, being in La Spezia today is an honor, and I certainly owe it in part to the strong season I had last year in Cosenza. When I heard there was a chance that Florenzi and Mazzocchi might join me here in La Spezia, I immediately wrote to both of them, telling them that this was a whole different world compared to other places—that you could really see the difference between Serie C and a club like this one. So I definitely put in a good word for them, but my intervention certainly wasn’t needed to convince them.
A message for the fans? I can say that this team will give it their all, just as they’re giving it their all during these days of training camp; we want to be as competitive as possible and we’ll try to live up to that goal, but as always, the field will have the final say. I can tell you to come to the stadium and stick with us.”
