The fifties were for Spezia one of the worst periods that the team has ever known since the days of its foundation. In fact, in 1950-51 Spezia abandoned after ten years Serie B, a category that would never see again for over half a century. To that relegation followed other two consecutive relegations. Therefore Spezia sank in Regional Promotion. Aquilotti were forced to play against the local districts and collected only a poor fourth place: it was the darkest moment in the history of the club. To get out of that situation, Spezia merged with Arsenalspezia, a team that played in the higher category (4th Series): the new society took the name of A.C. Spezia-Arsenal, and the sky blue became part of the social colors; the society could then restart from the 4th Series. In 1955 the club returned to the name F.B.C. Spezia 1906 and also the colors returned to be the traditional ones. In the season 1956-57 Spezia obtained third place in the standings that allowed to access to the 4th Series 1st Series", a championship of Interregional Excellence which consisted of three rounds, established exceptionally to facilitate the enlargement of the Serie C from one to three rounds. In 1957-58 Aquilotti finally managed to win the championship, coming first in their group of Eccellenza Interregionale 4th Series, and also won the title of Champions of Italy 4th Series tied with OZO Mantova and Cosenza. Therefore Spezia returned to Serie C, where it collected immediately a third and a sixth place.
