Spezia, just promoted to Serie C1, was immediately one of the protagonists of the championship, thanks to the arrival of young promises as Budel and Zaccardo, which completed a team already very competitive. In the 2000-01 season, the Aquilotti started well and beat good teams like Pisa and Livorno, but some teams were too strong to defeat, like Modena and Como. Spezia still managed to place fifth and participated in the play-off, from which, however, was eliminated by Como.
The following year, 2001-02, was one of the most beautiful and exciting in the history of Spezia even if it did not end with the promotion to Serie B. The Aquilotti reinforced the team with players like Pisano, Buso, and Caverzan and played a great championship that ended in a head-to-head with Livorno. Epic were the victories, both at home and away, with all the historical rival teams of the Aquilotti. However, in the end, the Tuscans won for only one point over Spezia, and Spezia, exhausted by the long duel Livorno, was then eliminated from the play-off by Triestina. The disappointment went on in the following championships because Spezia couldn’t reach the play-off in the following years. Mandorlini went to Vicenza, and the entrepreneur Zanoli is left alone by his partners. Only the entry of Massimo Moratti's Inter (represented by Ernesto Paolillo) in the company saved the coffers from possible bankruptcy. On the bench, there were different coaches but the only concrete satisfaction that came in those seasons was the conquest, in 2005, of the Coppa Italia Serie C.
