The first half of the seventies saw Spezia as the protagonist of a long series of mediocre championships; there were few changes in the players: men like S.Motto, F.Bonanni, G.Memo, U.Franceschi, D.Giulietti, S.Lo Monaco, A.Biloni and F.Rollandi wore the white shirt for many consecutive years and the only matches of interest to the public were the classic derbies with the Tuscan and Emilian teams. In 1976-77 Spezia obtained an optimal third place; the team was coached by Nedo Sonetti assisted by its second Franco Scoglio. The 1977-78 season was worthy of note too, since Aquilotti, guided by Scoglio while Sonetti participated in a technical course to Coverciano, obtained a sixth place that allowed them to approach the upcoming Serie C1. The team was not at the same level as the competitors and retroceded in Serie C2; after a year, thanks to a penalty inflicted to the Rondinella for illicit sport, Spezia returned in Serie C1. The striker Massimo Barbuti was the top scorer of the group with 23 goals
