At the final whistle of the match at the “Braglia,” Spezia head coach Roberto Donadoni shared his thoughts on his team’s performance: "I think the match was balanced, especially in the first half. Then the goal changed the momentum and we lacked the intensity needed to get back into the game. We weren’t sharp enough, we simply held our positions and when you lack determination and ruthlessness in front of goal, you’re always chasing the result.
This wake-up call has to help us understand that on Tuesday we’ll need to approach the match with a very different level of intensity and competitive edge.
The defense? After the fact it’s always easier to judge, but I don’t think the defense suffered particularly, aside from a couple of situations where we needed a different level of attention, especially on the third goal, where we lacked the determination shown by Gliozzi, who attacked the chance convinced he would score. It’s that spirit that makes the difference, and today in general we didn’t look convinced we could do what was necessary to score. We never filled the penalty area and were too predictable and passive in our attacking choices.
I don’t think it was an issue with our approach, because in the first half the game was very balanced. Rather, today we lacked clarity, ruthlessness and, overall, the spirit that had characterized us in recent matches.
Today Modena showed that edge. Even without creating many chances, they punished us with sharpness and determination, qualities that we lacked today.
The absences? Clearly not being able to make changes during the match or give Artistico a breather is a limitation, but I hope the situation will soon return to what it was just a few games ago".
