Speaking ahead of the match against Modena, head coach Roberto Donadoni shared his thoughts: “Compared to the match against Monza, there won’t be many changes in terms of personnel. Aside from Ruggero, who was suspended, we won’t have any returns for the Modena game, while in the coming days Lapadula will rejoin the group and I also expect Vlahovic and Di Serio back soon.
Never change a winning team? We have several games in a short span of time, so we’ll also have to consider energy management. That said, I still have a couple of doubts regarding certain roles and we’ll try to make the best choices.
We’ll certainly have to see what choices Modena make. We have the reference of the first-leg match, but what matters most is focusing on ourselves and playing the kind of game we know we can. If we think about the match against Monza, it’s clear that what really matters is how you step onto the pitch and what you want to show, regardless of the gap in the standings. In football there are countless examples where quality alone isn’t enough and where the gap can be closed through attitude and organization.
How do you limit certain defensive mistakes? You have to move well as a unit, not as individuals but as a defensive line. That’s what can make up for individual errors. It’s easy to blame one player, but you also have to consider what his teammate didn’t do to prevent that mistake from becoming decisive.
As I always say, mistakes can happen. What matters is reacting and having the ability to clearly interpret game situations and read them in the best possible way. That’s why I say we need to think as a unit rather than pointing the finger at individuals.
We have to work on ourselves, understand what we want to propose and be clear about our principles. Of course you also need to know how to face the opponent in front of you, but it’s the intensity with which you do things that makes the difference. If you force a strong team to make quick decisions, you can put them in difficulty; if you give them space and time, that can become a problem.
You have to be able to read every situation, understand when it’s better to clear the ball into the stands and when you can instead try to play out.
Against Modena we’ll need to stay short and compact, not allow the opposition’s quality to emerge, and we’ll also need to be aggressive. Modena have pace, quality and are very comfortable running with the ball, but again, I don’t want to think only about how to contain them, but also about what we can do to create problems for our opponents.
Bandinelli? Filippo is an important player and I’m very happy that he’s come back well and also scored against Monza. He’s had six difficult months, now he needs to find consistency and the confidence that he’s fully overcome his physical issues, so he can also free himself emotionally from that burden. He’s a leader with the personality to set an example for the younger players, but in general we’ll need everyone in this final stretch, which will certainly be very demanding".
