In the 2017/18 season, the sporting director Andrissi entrusted the bench to coach Fabio Gallo, who after leading Spezia Primavera from 2014 to 2016, had made other experiences, respectively on the benches of Santarcangelo and Como. Precisely from Como would bring with him one of his protégés, the midfielder Matteo Pessina, who arrived in Spezia during the summer market. In addition to him, Spezia project also included names such as Marilungo (who will close the season with 10 goals, the team's top scorer), Walter Lopez, Bolzoni, the young Augello, and especially Gilardino, who remained unemployed after his experience in Serie A at Pescara. For Gallo and his team, however, the season didn’t open in the best way, with two consecutive defeats in the championship and the elimination by Coppa Italia in the 3rd round (after defeating Reggiana at the beginning of August) at the "Mapei" against Sassuolo. The first joy in the championship arrived in the Ligurian derby against Entella, which was followed by an unstable path, which however allowed the team to close the first round in the play-off zone, with a total of 27 points. In the second half of the season, the average points remained almost the same, with the team of mister Gallo that struggled to do better especially in the play-offs. The season ended in 10th place, with 53 points, in a season that saw Empoli, Parma, and Frosinone win the top series.
